New York Taxpayers Pay $13,636 per Parking Spot at Binghamton Airport

Asphalt, being an oil-based product, has always been pricey. But I didn’t realize the prices had reached $13,636 per parking spot–that is, a space big enough for one vehicle to park in. That’s the price New York State taxpayers just paid for 88 new parking spots at the Greater Binghamton Airport. From today’s Press & Sun-Bulletin article, Greater Binghamton Airport updates to be celebrated:

Broome County Executive Barbara J. Fiala [D-Binghamton] and state Sen. Thomas W. Libous, R-Binghamton, will host a ceremony showcasing the completion of a parking lot reconstruction project officials say has made the Town of Maine facility easier and safer to use.

The project was funded by two state grants totaling $1.2 million.

About 88 more parking spaces have been added to both long-term and short-term parking areas at the airport, said Leigh Ann Scheider, spokeswoman for Fiala.

Hey, let’s go celebrate with our brilliant leaders and fellow citizens who just GOT FLEECED to the tune of $1.2M!

When will someone in government get responsible with MY money? And why can’t the airport pay for it’s own improvements from revenues it earns from the airlines?

It’s even worse to think that they still charge you to park there….at that price, we should get to park for free!
