Ithaca – Where Only Liberal Speech is Protected

Your right to free speech will soon be revoked. Ithaca, liberal bastion located not more than an hour from Binghamton, is a small preview of what’s coming under the iron fist of the Obama/Reid/Pelosi political troika. From the American Thinker comes an article titled, A Place Where Only Liberal Speech Is Protected, written by Cornell professor William Jacobson. It seems the Ithaca Common Council, who has among other things voted to support the impeachment of George W. Bush, has decided it should protect the political speech of those who share their liberal views, but not those who hold a different view.
It has always fascinated me how liberals and leftists, who are supposedly the most open-minded among us, tolerating and indeed celebrating every weird, whacked-out philosophy, religion or “lifestyle” are in fact the most close-minded and bigotted people around. They tolerate anyone who agrees with them, but use every means at their disposal to silence those who disagree. The libs are the opposite of what they claim to be.
Case in point: Very soon you are going to hear a lot of noise in the mainstream media about the so-called Fairness Doctrine, which is nothing more than a naked attempt to shut down political dissent in this country. This latest attempt to eviscerate the First Amendment is brought to you by the Democrats. They hate Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Mark Levin (whom I used to work with at the White House), and others who artfully, cogently, skillfully dissent with the left.
But Democrats, like the odious Chuck Schumer and the useful idiot Maurice (Mo) Hinchey, are going to spin a yarn that would make Mark Twain’s jaw drop open in admiration of its audacity: With the full support of mainstream media, the liberal Dems are going to try to shut down talk radio and other conservative sources of political speech and dissent. And they’ll try to do it by telling you black is white and white is black. That is, they’ll say it’s not “fair” to have all these conservative views being aired on radio with no corresponding leftist views. Hello?! Can anyone say CBS, ABC, NBC, MSNBC, CNN, NPR, Washington Post, New York Times, LA Times, et al? We get the standard leftist pap from them day and night! But that’s not enough for Chuck and Mo.
Brief history lesson: In the earliest days of our country pamphleteers wrote stirring and inspiring works (pamphlets) that helped ignite the American Revolution, notably Thomas Paine. In contrast to Paine, some pamphleteers wrote nasty, scurrilous accusations against political opponents. They were, to put it politely, downright lies. What we today would call “hate speech.” And yet, that’s EXACTLY why the First Amendment to the Constitution was ratified. It was to protect all speech–even lies–and even the speech of those with whom you strongly disagree.
Why does the Constitution protect all speech, including lies? Because the Founders knew that sooner or later those who pedal such lies would be found out and their own dishonesty would blow back and hurt them. That is, they believed in something called truth–that in the end, truth would win out. They believed in people’s good common sense and ability to discern the truth from a lie. Our Founders saw free speech and liberty as one and the same. The opening words of the Constituion tell us that everyone has certain inalienable (can’t-take-them-away) rights: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Apparently not with Democrats in charge.
Professor Jacobson’s article gives us great insight into how inalienable rights become alienable when the libs come to town and rule (with an iron fist). Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Exercise your free speech now, before it’s too late.

The only problem that I see with this argument is that the Founders could not see ahead to a time where the truth is less published than the lie, and where the lie has become entertainment. Could they have ever foreseen the American culture degrading to the point where “newspapers” like the Enquirer and countless other rags could publish absolute lies and not be punished? Could they ever foresee a culture in which you can write anything you want about a “popular figure” and that figure has little recourse because the courts seem to want to punish them for being a public figure? Could they ever foresee a culture where photographers (paparazzi) can literally trample on every privacy right there is?
Where is the punishment for spreading lies? Where is truth winning out? I’ve mentioned it before, but did the truth win out for the millions of third world children that died of malaria because Rachel Carson and friends pushed for DDT to be banned?
I’m all for free speech as the founders saw it. You know that… But I am wondering why liars continually get away with it. Here’s another instance. In our voting district, an outright lie cost a man an election. A cheap, dirty, and rotten lie… And the liar’s punishment? A seat of power.
The Fairness Doctrine is crap. I agree. Crap put out there by a bunch of whiners hemhorraging audience members every day. We have the right to disagree with each other, and the right to shout to the heavens about it.
We also have the right to lie, but there should be a real consequence to it.
Great article. Thanks.

Thank YOU Brent! You always have great insights, and this one is no exception. No doubt technology has made the speed at which lies travel much faster. And as you point out, the founders would never have imagined so many telling lies so constantly that the public becomes immune to the very concept of truth, as our society has. But then, I posit that people still really do know the truth–deep down. If they believe the lie, it is because they choose to do so.
The punishment for spreading lies? That’s in God’s hands. Our part is to keep telling the truth and to never, ever give up. Even when (like today) all seems lost.
Blogging, which I think of as the new pampleteering, is one way we can keep telling the truth. And sooner or later, I hope and pray, we can win people over to the truth!
