It always seemed to me when Eliot Spitzer was Attorney General he would target a particular legitimate business enterprise (one with lots of money), make noise about some technical violation of the law, then that business would pay money to the state and it would all disappear quietly. That, my friends, is called a “shake down” in street language. It’s reminiscent of the mafia or modern-day gangs. It is no surprise to me this type of bullying behavior has continued while Eliot “The Don” Spitzer occupies the governor’s chair. Only this time he’s buying votes.

A few weeks ago, The Don decided that ILLEGAL aliens be given the right to obtain driver’s licenses. This dictatorial pronouncement from on high (read it here) uses the lame justification that too many people are uninsured while driving, and they are uninsured because they are here illegally and can’t apply for a driver’s license for fear of being deported (rightfully so!). And once they have a license they will run right out and buy auto insurance, thus lowering insurance costs for everyone in New York. Laughable! And so, starting in December of 2007, The Don will force Departments of Motor Vehicles across the state to grant illegals a driver’s license. Yes, I hear you screaming, “But what about terrorists that will use this to move about our country and do us harm!” I know, I know! You see, such minor concerns as terrorism take a back seat to the true purpose of this “magnanimous” gesture. What is the true purpose? It will be much easier for illegals with a driver’s license to register and vote. And of course, they will remember The Don and his party (Democrat) when they go to the ballot box. Thus ensuring another 100 years of Democrat control in the Empire State. A few terrorist strikes are a small price to pay for such a big payoff, don’t you think? It’s disgusting.

Fortunately, there are a number of county clerks across the state who intend to refuse to obey this blatantly illegal policy (see the Oct. 4 Press & Sun-Bulletin article). Unfortunately, our own Broome County Clerk, Richard Blythe (a Republican), is not (yet) on the list of clerks with intestinal fortitude. Let’s hope he grows some…resolve. In the meantime, the Republican-controlled Senate is vowing to pass legislation preventing this illegal action by The Don. But don’t hold your breath, because the Democrat-controlled Assembly won’t go along.
